Don't Tempt the Wrath of Federal Agents.  Meet Your Legal Obligations, and Live Long and Prosper.

Website Legal Obligations

One of the best things about the internet is that it is still relatively free of crushing regulation.  It still operates a lot like a truly free market.  Because of this, there aren't a lot of rules and regulations (yet) that you have to worry about.  I have written more about this in the Legal Stuff section of Components of a Business Website.  Go back and re-read the information there.

There are basically three things you have to worry about currently.  Make sure your website has all of them before you open to the public.  You must have a Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, and a Disclosure Statement.

You can Google the terms "sample privacy policy" and "sample Terms of Use" to get a good starting point.  You can also look at other websites or blogs that you are competing with (that are in your niche) and see what they have used for theirs.

Regardless of how you start the process of bringing your website or blog into legal compliance, always make sure that your statement is tailored for the nuances involved with your unique website and its needs.  When you have a good working copy of each page, be sure to run them by your lawyer for any last-minute edits.  Again, see the Legal Stuff section in the Components of a Business Website page for additional details.
